Taking it to the mat

What's the best part about teaching mixed martial arts?

This is what I love to do. Sharing what I have learned from such greats as Renzo Gracie and John Danaher, this is not work to me, this is not fighting, it's physical chess. This, to me, is like watching the sunrise or holding a newborn baby in your arms. It's that beautiful.

Besides self-defense, what does mixed martial arts teach?

It teaches many types of human qualities like discipline, focus, self control, patience, and a true sense of right and wrong. These are the qualities of a champion.

What makes Denville the right place to locate your school?

The people who come here are great. The students who come to train are from very different backgrounds, too many to mention, but on the mat we are all the same, like brothers and sisters.

What separates your school from others of its type?

Real World Martial is directly under the supervision of the world famous Renzo Gracie Academy. The Gracie family is responsible for introducing Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu to the rest of the world and Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is on fire right now.

What types of classes does your school offer?

We offer Renzo Gracie Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and kickboxing for both beginners and advanced students.

Why should people become interested in martial arts?

Martial arts builds character and a sense of fairness. Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu teaches that in a way that no other style martial art can offer. We have a little saying that the truth is always told on the mat! Because we know this is as real as it gets.

How long has Real World Mixed Martial Arts existed?

We are going to be open for four years on Sept. 15. I have been teaching full time since 1988, but for four years at this location.

What's the most popular form of mixed martial arts?

Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, hands down. Everything that does not work is disregarded. What has been proven time and time again is that leverage and technique will overcome strength and power every time and those are the foundation of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu.

What are your other hobbies besides martial arts?

Boating is great fun, balancing on a tube going 30 miles per hour is very humbling. Not to mention the wake board. Most of the time I am just doing what I love most: working out with the guys.
